From FOOD and BEHAVIOR, A Natural Connection, Barbara Reed Stitt
Here’s Barbara Stitt’s story:
She became a probation officer in Akron, Ohio in 1963 & in the same year, she became seriously ill. Her symptoms included extreme fatigue & lethargy. Even when she did sleep at night, she woke up “dead tired”. She had violent mood swings going from “giddy heights to bleak lows.” She had difficulty sleeping, horrifying nightmares waking her in a cold sweat & her physical health also deteriorated. She wrote that her most frightening symptoms were memory lapses where she was unable to remember what she had just said or done or how she got from one place to another. After seeing 3 MD’s who all diagnosed her symptoms coming from stress & who all prescribed tranquilizers, she almost gave up hope of finding a cure after the tranquillizer made her feel worse. Then she found a book on nutrition by Gaylord Hauser who advised people who wanted to be healthy to STOP eating “dead foods” – i.e. refined & processed “foods” like refined sugar, white flour, coffee, etc. He recommended that people eat LIVE FOODS, fresh vegetables & fruits in particular. Stitt recognized her diet as a dead food diet which included drinking 10 – 12 cups of coffee a day. She decided to follow his recommendations which she said was not an easy transition for her. However, as she put it, “IT WORKED”. She began to sleep every night, woke refreshed, with no more nightmares, no more cold sweats, and no more memory lapses. She reported that she had unlimited energy & her other health problems improved. The amazing part, other than curing herself with a change in diet, was that it all happened in a matter of weeks. Her experience shows knowledge is power & empowering.
A junk food diet is associated with nutritional deficiencies because the “food” is dead and B vitamins are very likely to be deficient or absent in this type of diet.
In the 1970's, seven out of ten typical probationers committed another, usually more serious, crime and ended up back in prison. Over 80% of the probationers seen by Stitt, (over 5,000) from 1970 through 1982, did not go back to prison. They became healthy and productive members of society, after starting on Stitt's diet. Barbara Stitt had such amazing results with her parolees who followed her diet recommendations that she made national news at the time.
