Self-help groups, also known as support groups and peer support groups, are places or experiences, where people who share a common problem come together for support. This can be accomplished at group meetings, telephone chains, computer chat rooms, e mails, etc.
Members with the same issues can come together and share coping strategies, feel more empowered and have a sense
of community. Help may take the form of relating personal experiences, listening to and accepting others' experiences, providing sympathetic understanding, providing, discussing and evaluating relevant information and research and establishing social networks. A support group can also be pro-active and work to inform the public of successful approaches to their problems and/or advocate for relevant changes.
